The Big Problem with Figuring Out Senior Care

The Internet is a powerful way to figure out your options.  When you book a hotel or search for a restaurant, you are mere clicks away from the information you need.

Why isn’t it the same for senior care?

Senior care is a big decision that requires planning and budgeting.  You need to know what kinds of care are out there, which care providers are around you, and whether those providers can meet your needs.  We cannot stress enough: you must do your research on senior care, and far in advance of when you need it.

If you are not prepared, senior care is a decision that will sneak up on you.  If you are not informed about senior care and are forced to make choices regarding the care of a loved one, you could make poor decisions with lasting economic and personal consequences.

Despite this, many people still find senior care confusing, overwhelming, and even scary to think about.  And sadly, the Internet is of little help in this regard.

In this article, we address the issues with finding info on senior care, and give you some quick and easy resources.

YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW

Many people don’t even know where to start when trying figuring out senior care.  They don’t know what information they should be looking up, or where they should look, or even what questions they should be asking.  Basically, they don’t know what they don’t know.

If you look up “senior care” on the Internet, you are bombarded with a variety of options, including advertisements and websites for care providers that may or may not suit your needs.  Some websites attempt to provide information on different types of senior care, but they are not easy to understand.  A website might have an article on “assisted living facilities ” and an article on “independent living facilities” but fail to clearly tell you what makes them different.

In sum, the Internet lacks a central location with essential information on senior care, and an easy way to compare the different types of care so that you can find one or two that suit you.

It isn’t enough to know your options.  To make a choice, you need to know the differences between your options.

SHOPPING AROUND FOR THE RIGHT CARE PROVIDER IS EXHAUSTING

Even after you find a care option that sounds like it might be the right fit, how do you go about searching for a care provider that meets your criteria?

You can find some facilities and care providers on the Internet.  However, you will likely have to research each individual provider to find out vital information such as (1) what they offer, (2) whether they have a vacancy, (3) what restrictions they have, and (4) their costs of care.

This may mean looking through each provider’s individual website, or scouring through listings that may be outdated or inaccurate.  If a provider does not have a website, you will likely have to call them to ask a lot of questions.  Either way, you probably won’t get all the information you need about an individual provider online -- you’ll have to call them.

This means calling each provider, one by one, to find answers to the same essential questions.  You will probably have to share the same information about you or your loved one, over and over again, only to find out that the provider is not a good fit for you.

The bottom line is that calling providers one-by-one to find out essential information is frustrating and time-consuming.
